Welcome & Introductions

Teresa Lunt, the PFC chair, opened the meeting with introductions at 2PM. Participants shared their favorite winter activity. The December minutes were approved with a correction to note that Teresa Lunt was an absent Steering Committee Member.

Member Recognition

After many years as PFC Chair, Teresa Lunt will be stepping down. She plans to continue as a Steering Committee Member until she moves to Colorado later in 2019, but she wants to allow time for a seamless transition of her duties as coalition chair. Coalition members recognized her and shared appreciation for her countless hours volunteering for the coalition, leadership both in local communities, the state, and nationally on the issue of substance misuse prevention. Members reminisced about her dedication to the coalition including helping chaperone four youth at a national leadership conference, participating in staff hiring process, and building relationships and support for other coalitions across Minnesota. We are so glad Teresa will continue as a coalition member but she will certainly be missed.

Police Chiefs Meeting

At the December coalition meeting, members expressed interest in having PFC host another Police Chiefs luncheon. The meeting will be held February 25. Invitations to our nine police chiefs and Sheriff Hutchinson have been sent. The luncheon will be an opportunity to discuss PFC’s four key strategies and determine the level of support and action steps within each city. Participation at the meeting will be limited to Chiefs, the PFC chair and staff. We want the Chiefs to feel like this is their meeting for open conversation, not a public gathering.

Planning Discussion & Brainstorm

Participants broke into three groups to discuss on specific tasks within the marijuana perception of harm work plan.

  1. Educate city, county, state and federal policy makers
  • Attend City Council meetings: bring SAM MN handout, provide information and resources about banning dispensaries and requiring businesses to comply with Federal laws.
  • Meet with Hennepin County Sheriff or designated rep to continue relationship
  • Meet with DPS Commissioner John Harrington
  • Meet with MDH Commissioner Jan Malcolm
  • Meet with Governor Tim Walz
  • PFC members will send emails to their Reps and Senators as personal citizens. A PFC member will develop a sample letter including myths and facts information from SAM MN.
  • Lauren Prnjat has data about CO and WA poisoning calls related to marijuana

2. Create a communication and action plan among MN prevention organizations

  • Much of this work was accomplished through creating the SAM MN affiliate
  • Need to ensure the Regional Prevention Coordinators are connecting coalitions to SAM MN
  • Need to ensure statewide tobacco coalition
  • SAM MN has connected with staff at the Chiefs/Sheriffs associations so that they can coordinate efforts

3. Meet with editorial boards and key reporters

  • Local Sun Post papers
  • Star Tribune
  • Pioneer Press
  • U of M Journalism school master’s program and encourage an article in the MN Daily

4. Promote educational opportunities to community members

  • Community education in cities
  • Hold a community summit similar to the policymaker summit
  • Insert in utility bill
  • Surveys
  • Billboard

5. Include marijuana education and perception of harm in school district curriculum

  • Outreach to school board members
  • Find out the timeline for each district’s health curriculum review
Community Partner Sharing

Marie shared that both Maple Grove Hospital and North Memorial Health Hospital will be conducting community needs assessments in 2019. Focus groups are being scheduled for April. PFC members should plan to attend the healthcare and social service professionals focus group, if possible, or the community member focus group if the other doesn’t work out. If we want to continue partnership with and support from North, substance misuse prevention needs to show up in their community assessment.

Sheila shared the North Memorial car seat clinic schedule for 2019. Click here for upcoming clinics (scroll down to see future dates.) Ask Sheila if you would like a print flier that can be posted. Feel free to share these dates with interested community members.
